The Pelican is Strindberg's one of the most profound and distressing plays. The storyline revolves around the tragic changes in a family following the death of the father and the marriage of the daughter. Throughout the play protagonists are entangled in a deep and harrowing family drama, trying to unveil each and every sin recurrent in their family. Children compel their mother to abolish her inherent needs of sexuality and private life, summoning her to sacrifice herself both physically and emotionally as the Pelican, which according to a legend, feeds its offspring with its own heart blood. The multitude of conflicts finally leads to a series of catastrophic confrontations in which the family turns against the mother and brings about the destruction of the entire household. The pattern has various allusions with the works of Shakespeare, Ibsen, Sophocles Euripides, and many more who dwell around the similar topics of vicious behavioral patterns that lead to an inevitable demolition.
