Freken Julie is one of the most interesting, informative and insightful plays in terms of

directing as well as acting. This is a story of people belonging to drastically different social

strata involved in the whirlwind of desires and manipulations.

Review

At first glance, Levan Tsuladze's choice to stage August Steinberg's "Froken Julie" in Theater Factory 42 was

unexpected. However, if we look at his plays about women's rights in recent years - "Kreutzer Sonata",

"Marriage of Figaro", "Crime and Punishment", "Othello", a certain logic can still be read. Levan Tsuladze

brought the outstanding play of the 20th century dramaturgy, almost declared as manifesto, to the environment

of modern bakery and hi-tech. Freken Julie (Anka Vasadze) listens to electronic music with headphones, while

Zhan (Paata Papuashvili) looks like a dandy and is not at all a victim of social inequality. He is just waiting for

the moment when Freken Julies' pride is destroyed by whim and anger and the right time will come for revenge.

Tired of baking bread, Christine (Anuka Grigolia) simply exists with the predatory psychology of a servant and

achieves her goal in the end when she practically takes the place of Freken Julie... With a lot of details and

ironic references to Strindberg's favorite theme - the constant quarrel between men and women, Tsuladze's play

has a really brilliant, controversial and provocative finale - Freken Julies' revenge on Vagina! That has the

power of attraction and repulsiveness at the same time. And it depends on who looks at the modern theater from

what angle?
