Contact Zone is an inclusive contemporary dance performance with participation of disabled
and non-disabled artists. The piece unites three short choreographic performances, exploring
the forms of physical and spatial contact between oneself and the outside world. Through
contemporary dance and music, the audience and the artists engage in the work, creating the
contact zones between people and groups of people living in parallel realities otherwise
separated from each other. “Let Me Tell You Something,” an episode choreographed by
Valeria Khripatch on the music of Nino Davadze, tells about divergent interpretations of
reality and about seeking a common language. In the second episode, featuring Veronika
Tikhonova’s choreography and Anushka Chkheidze’s music, characters from different
realities find themselves sometimes in the open spaces of the Universe, or sometimes as a
part of a virtual game where the rules are always changing. “Lazy Jane,” combining the
chorography of Natia Chikvaidze and the music of Gvantsa Enukidze, connects us to our
body, identity, and internal chaos, where one voice unites with many different voices. Do we
listen to all those voices and characters which reside within us? Can we start contact with the
outside world without knowing the million selves we have inside?!
Review
When a couple of years ago, the choreographer and researcher of inclusive art, Maka Chkhaidze founded the
platform of inclusive ideas - InForm, the public was still less informed about the existence of this direction in
the theater. Thus, the play "Contact Zone", which was created in collaboration with the Platform of Inclusive
Ideas and "Open Space", contains clear and specific messages for studying the relationship between the body
and the outside world. First of all, because dance is one of the best ways to realize inclusion and motivate
children and adults with disabilities (as well as artists working in the field of disabilities) to come into direct
contact with modern dance theater.
The approximately one-hour performance - "Zone of Contact" is a combination of three choreographic novellas
that explores the forms of physical and spatial contact between bodies and the environment. The novella "I want
to tell you something" unites Valeria Khripachi's choreography and Nino Davadze's music with the desire to
search for the universal but distinctive "subjectivity" of bodies. which allows the participants of the play to
realize their potential.
The composition "Supermassyuri", the choreography of which was created by Veronika Tikhonova (music by
Anushka Chkheidze), is an attempt to connect different realities. For example, characters who have landed in
open space from outer space "invent" various virtual games to connect with the world. Which allows the
choreographer to add strength to the imagination and to some extent, give it a funny outlet.
Choreographer Natia Chikvaidze adapted the composition "Lazy Jane" to the music of Gvantsa Enukidze and
dedicated it to the study of the internal state of the body, introspection; That is, to bring order to the chaos of the
voices that sound inside a person... Director Davit Khorbaladze meaningfully connected all three choreographic
novellas, connected them and ad
InForm – Platform for Inclusive Ideas is an independent arts organization, supporting the
development of inclusive art and the integration of underrepresented groups into
contemporary artistic processes in Georgia. We aspire to make
the art sector in Georgia accessible, inclusive and diverse for artists of all abilities by
powerful artistic collaborations,
knowledge transfer, and by forming a strong and inspiring inclusive artistic community.
Since 2022 the inclusive dance theatre group of InForm has been offering the audience
contemporary dance performances featuring artists with and without disabilities.
Performances are shown in different artistic venues. InForm's first show IN C - Tbilisi,
created in cooperation with the contemporary dance company "Sasha Waltz & Guests", was
staged in the Royal District Theater. The play also was presented in the Georgian showcase
programme of the festival’s 2023 edition.
"Contact Zone" is the second original piece of InForm, which was staged in the performing
and visual arts center "Open Space" in 2023.
