Manipulation of emotions. Love as an illness. Falling victim to one's passion's cage. "The
Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant" is a drama by Rainer Werner Fassbinder written in 1971. The
well-known movie was filmed in 1972.
"I enjoy torturing myself more than I do being tortured by others," declared Rainer Werner
Fassbinder, the film's director. The director's words capture the spirit of the movie the best.
Naturally, torture involves emotional manipulation and mental agony.
Beyond the confines of the genre, a melodramatic story becomes a deeper intellectual drama
set against the backdrop of a passionate love story, raising themes like independence,
obedience, loneliness, and manipulation of other people's emotions.
Review
The stage version of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's famous film has many important contexts in Georgia today.
The production is distinguished by sophisticated visual aesthetics, impressive acting and directorial decisions
and explores hierarchical relationships between people, homosexual relationships, passions of love and power.
Davit Mgebrishvili staged the play in "New Theatre", which is always looking for innovations and newness. In
Europe, in the 70s of the last century, the current topics and the boldness of the creative group sound especially
strongly here and now, when soon, perhaps, in the name of protecting family values and on the charge of
promoting same-sex relationships, similar works will be declared illegal.
Tbilisi's Vaso Abashidze was established in 1926 and was given the name State Theater
among many other titles. Its repertoire for ten years consisted only of musical comedies.
Directors, actors, composers, playwrights, artists and choreographers —many well-known
Georgians worked there.
David Doiashvili took over as an artistic director of the Tbilisi Music and Drama State
Theater in 2004. He elevated Georgian theater to a new level through encouraging the theater
to try new forms and texts , new methods and providing new possibilities for the expression
of progressive ideas. the most recognized performances are "Macbeth," "(Mid)summer night
Dream" by Shakespeare, "the lower debth M. Gorky," "Cyrano de Bergerac" by Edmon
Rostan, "Pillowman" by McDonagh, "Tartufe" by Moliere, and many more. Being one of
Georgia's most inventive and prosperous theaters, we have won numerous awards and honors
and are continuing to gain not just national but also international recognition and reputation.
Our theater opened a brand-new, highly-acclaimed stage in 2021.
The State Theater of Music and Drama relocated to a new location in 2021 and reopened with
the new name "NEW THEATER".
