Theatre of Nekrošius: both Sides of the Curtain

Photography by Dmitri Matveev

Curator: Audrius Jankauskas

Produced by: Meno fortas Theatre

With a support by Lithuanian Ministry of Culture and Lithuanian Council for Culture

Eimuntas Nekrošius disliked cameras. He avoided being photographed at all times,

so few portraits of the director are available today. He did not like his performances being

photographed as well. Photographer Dmitrij Matvejev has a unique approach and he diligently

accumulated an archive of photographs from Nekrošius' productions of more than twenty years,

remaining invisible, yet distinguished for his aesthetic expression. Photographer follows the

performances on stage, as well as backstage, capturing actors' moods, moments of creative

process, the play of light. In other words – everything that occurs on both sides of a curtain.

The photographs are not displayed in a chronological order; rather they represent an

emotional journey over diverse productions, starting from Three Sisters staged in 1995 for

Life Festival, continuing through productions of Meno Fortas Theatre, including Macbeth (1998),

Otello (2000), The Seasons (2003), Song of Songs (2004) Faust (2006), The Divine Comedy

and Paradise (2012), The Book of Job (2013) and A Hunger Artist (2015), Boris Godunov (2015)

staged at the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre, Dziady (2018) at Teatr Narodowy of Poland,

and ending with Sons of a Bitch (2018) produced at Klaipėda Drama Theatre

Significant part of the exhibition includes photographs from Hamlet's rehearsals in 1997,

as well as images captured at Kronborg Castle (Elsinore) in Denmark, where the company

rehearsed and performed Hamlet.

The exhibition opened at Lithuanian Theatre Music and Cinema Museum in 2020, was presented in Šiluva in 2021, Dusetos Arts Gallery, Panevezys Public Library (2021) Klaipeda Drama Theatre (2022), Lithuanina Parlament Gallery (2023).
